In the village of Pete, a short drive from Jozani Forest, the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre keeps butterflies native to Zanzibar and the East African coast in a large garden enclosure. Local staff show you every stage of the life cycle, from egg to caterpillar to pupa to flight.
It is also a community project: local farmers are trained in butterfly farming as an extra source of income, so your visit supports families on the island. A small shop sells crafts made by local women's groups.
